Aron arabai : the Temne masks of chieftaincy
Aron arabai : the Temne masks of chieftaincy
The Smithsonian catalogs Aron arabai : the Temne masks of chieftaincy as articles in its Masks, Temne records.
WHY IT’S INTERESTING
An elusive Temne masks type, the aron arabai, virtually unknown in museum collections, was first documented by Northcote W. Thomas in 1916. Hart sheds light on this masking tradition, based on fieldwork. The aron arabai masks have brass faces and sometimes are janus-faced.
