Recovered from an ancient shipwreck, this corroded mechanism used precisely arranged gears to calculate astronomical cycles.
Its surviving fragments preserve an ambitious model of the sky. Mechanical relationships became a way of predicting celestial events.
A CLOSER LOOK
The Antikythera mechanism is an ancient Greek astronomical calculator. Researchers use imaging and inscriptions on its fragments to work out how its displays operated, including calculations connected with the Moon and eclipses.
Much of the device is missing. Modern reconstructions therefore combine physical evidence with proposed arrangements of the lost parts. The distinction matters: the surviving gears are ancient objects, while a complete model is an interpretation researchers can examine and challenge.
